●Introduction

The nectar of the flower that a friend has shown me is especially tasty!

Ageha, a kind of swallowtail butterfly called Chinese windmill, has relatively high self-esteem since he was raised at a primary school where the kids kept giving him compliments such as “you are beautiful” or “good boy,” while Shirasagi, an egret, is gentle, laid back and relaxed.

The two meet each other by chance, and go on a journey to look for yummy flower nectar at the wish of Ageha.

Ageha tries the nectar of rhododendrons and dandelions, and finally, Shirasagi shows him the “special cherry blossoms” that is beautiful like a frilled dress, so he can try its nectar.

●Author Biography

Text by Mintsu

Minna-de-tsukuru-ehon-no-kai (meaning “Association of picture book co-creation”) is an association based in Himeji, Hyogo whose picture book-loving members come together off-line and online to learn and talk about picture book enthusiastically. The members include an author of picture books, a professor, a former preschool teacher, a cram school tutor, an illustrator, housewives and househusbands who continue picture-book reading for years, a singer-songwriter, and a publisher, each having rich experience. The association is always open to new members. “A swallowtail and an egret, The special cherry blossoms” is the first picture book produced by Mintsu.

Illustrations by Yanami

Yanami is an illustrator based in Uji, Kyoto and originally from Himeji, Hyogo. She loves Himeji where she has a lot of memories such as a sketching event at Himeji Castle, a camp school at Shoshazan Engyoji Temple, and Aigikai’s cleanup activities around the castle. She wishes to vitalize Himeji using her illustrations, and voluntarily produces and distributes “Himeji Illustrated Map.”

Edited by Tetsu Kumagai

Tetsu Kumagai is the Director of a NPO called Harima satoyama lab, an emeritus professor at University of Hyogo, and a board member of the Flower Association of Japan (a public interest incorporated foundation), and has a Ph.D. in Science. He has revitalized the community-based forest behind his house in Himeji, Hyogo, and maintained it in good condition so that it can serve as a place where children can play and local people can relax. The place is open to the public as “Satoyama garden.”

Translated by Shizuka Funayama

Shizuka Funayama is a freelancer based in Hyogo, working with multiple organizations and projects in a variety of ways including her continuous work as a writer and translator. Though she spent a year in Australia as an undergrad and later obtained a Master’s degree in UK, what has refined her English is her decade-long involvement in international cooperation work especially in Africa.
